NATO chief urges allies to increase defense spending

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has called for increased and sustained defense spending from member states. He warned that the war in Ukraine could last for years and that the West must be prepared for the long haul. Stoltenberg also said that a stronger NATO and a less US-dependent Ukraine would allow the US to turn its attention to what should be its top priority.

Stoltenberg made his remarks at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, on Wednesday. He said that the war in Ukraine is a "wake-up call" for the West. "We have to invest more in our defense," he said. "We have to be prepared for the long haul."

Stoltenberg said that NATO is committed to supporting Ukraine. He said that the alliance is providing Ukraine with military equipment, training, and intelligence. He also said that NATO is working to strengthen Ukraine's defenses.

Stoltenberg said that a stronger NATO and a less US-dependent Ukraine would allow the US to turn its attention to what should be its top priority. He said that the US should focus on the Indo-Pacific region, where China is rapidly expanding its military.
